Event recycling

I was at an event over the weekend at a major exhibition centre. Outside there were loads of recycling bins, which was good to see.

However, inside near the food areas, there were traditional waste bins. Clearly, the public wanted to recycle as recyclables had been left separated next to the bin. But they had nowhere to do it without going out of the hall.

The lesson is obviously that recycling always needs to be convenient.

  1. I agree completely. We recycle at home through our kerbside collections, because it is easy, but recycling on the go needs to be made just as convenient. This is why we need programmes like Every Can Counts where drink cans are collected at workplaces, colleges and universities. http://www.everycancounts.co.uk/. Also, as these cans are by far the most valuable commodity in the recycling bin, its makes economic sense to recycle them too. A drink can put into an Every Can Counts collection box could be made back into a can just 6 weeks. And this may save up to 95% of the energy as making cans from virgin ore.

  2. The waste collected inside the halls is tiny compared with the tonnes of waste from the dismantled exhibition stands. The problem with these are they are made up of mixed wood, plastics & metals and are not really designed for disassembly or recycling. A big issue for this industry.

  3. Festival and other event organisers could utilise their own MRF (mobile recycling facility) in order to process ALL the waste - we'd be happy to help - http://www.ivedesign.co.uk/enviro.htm
